Xi’an ChanBa Silk Road International Culture and Art Centre is located in the Consulate District of Xi’an ChanBa International Port Finance and Business Park. With a total floor area of 150196m², it is a crucial facility for foreign affairs services and cultural exchanges. It has four main buildings: the Poly Grand Theatre, the Auditorium, the Activity Centre, and the Arts Gallery, which is a complex space based on the concept of “culture + service”.
Xi’an ChanBa Silk Road International Culture and Art Centre is planned with the concept of “grand openness and balance, spaciousness and density”, which creates a low-density, ecological, and natural architectural complex, and ultimately forms a street-style art centre that combines both cultural exhibitions and economic trades.
The Poly Grand Theatre, inspired by “Pearl of the Ba River”, is like a gem from the Qinling Mountains set on the banks of the Ba River. As the first poly theater in Northwest China, it provides about 1500 seats and, with its precisely calculated acoustic design, can perfectly present international-level performances, including operas and musicals. In here, audiences can immerse themselves in the top-notch artistic performances.
The Auditorium, in contrast and complement to the Poly Grand Theatre, creates a participatory experience space that combines both modernity and artistry. It has the ability to quickly switch scenes and meet the needs of diverse activities, such as small concerts, experimental dramas, and cultural salons.
The Arts Gallery provides a new exhibition space to display and trade artworks. Since its opening, it has become a new place for citizens to deeply experience art and culture. The Arts Gallery and the Activity Centre are in the shape of a “three-dimensional magic box”. When walking around inside, it’s like strolling through an ever-changing art maze.
Through the collision and integration of “virtual and real”, “curved and straight”, the overall design of these four buildings deeply intertwines architecture with art and life, conveying a unique aesthetic charm. Under the exteriors that deeply explore and fully showcase the regional cultural features of Xi’an, these four core spaces individually perform their distinct functions, which form a complete functional system.
As an important cultural exchange base for Xi’an to implement the “Belt and Road” initiative, Xi’an ChanBa Silk Road International Culture and Art Centre has achieved a balance between professional performances and cultural benefits for the citizens, and integrated diverse arts with foreign affairs services. It has held about 400 performances and cultural events, over 50 free public exhibitions, and more than 70 diversified cultural activities.
This new cultural landmark not only brings outstanding artistic works from countries along the Silk Road to Xi’an, but also promotes the spread of fine traditional Chinese culture to the world, making it a bond for regional and international cultural communications, which adds a vivid footnote to the construction and development of Xi’an as a “World City of Humanity”.
